Every interested industrial company needs to be able to assign Unique and Persistent Identifiers (PID) to all Digital Objects, in particular digital data, they are creating and trading and resolve them to meaningful state information enabling further processing. Such a PID registration and resolution system must meet the following characteristics:
BASED ON STANDARDS
Based on standards, free of usage by everyone and driven by a non-profit organisation
DEFINE OWN NAME SPACE
Distributed and robust operation enabling companies to define their own name space
NEAR INFINITE ADDRESS SPACE
Near infinite address space and PKI protected PID management
AUTOMATED PROCESSING
Opening the way to tracking reuse and to automated processing
Making use of such a globally available
PID system does NOT mean that companies’ data will be visible to all, but it
ensures that with simple operations companies can make it visible if value
creation is intended.
The Handle
System is meeting the above criteria and is ready to be used.
It has been optimised during the past 20
years and its global activities are controlled by the independent and neutral
DONA Foundation setup in Geneva, Switzerland, which is led by an International
Board. It combines global resolution stability with the possibility of local
name spaces. It is already globally used in large industry projects and in data
intensive science.
DO-Space is
currently working on setting up a professional registration and resolution
service specialised on the needs of the European industry.
